I remember the first Earth Day event I went to in 1991. The main focus was on recycling and alternative energy. It was there that Boz and I learned about an annual event called The National Solar Tour.
At the time we were planning to build an OFF GRID Straw Bale Home on ten acres of raw land we had purchased in the high desert of northern Nevada situated one mile away from power. We even attended a day-long straw bale workshop where we had the opportunity to help someone else get their wall ( bales ) in place! Fast Forward 21 years and a lot has changed ( we left our land for the sunny shores of Cape Cod Bay and a tiny OFF-GRID BEACH cottage ) in the world and in the hearts of people world wide about the way we live and how we can make our world a healthier place. Being organic and homesteading in the 70's was for hippies and folks who were against " the establishment". At least that's what the media wanted us to think. Thanks to the hard work of those

This Earth Day I worked at the nursery selling lots of veggie plants mostly to people who want to grow as much of their own foods as they can in their own backyards.

ReplyDeleteOh I would love some Mountain Rose Tea! On Earth Day I was out digging in the dirt. I spent the weekend out in the lovely sunshine getting my garden beds ready to go. Doing an extreme amount of weeding and planting. Now I think it is a little time for relaxing and tea!

Here in So. Colorado we had a picture perfect day - We went to church where I got to hear my mother sing a song about the earth always renewing itself and creation (she is developing dementia and this was cause of celebration in itself, maybe the last time I hear her sing), then we had a picnic at a cut stone table like out of the Flintstones cartoon, along the Animas River Trail (a cement 'trail' so I could get my mom in a wheelchair and dad out too), then later we had a BBQ of grassfed beef... We enjoyed the day like no other: the smell of river trees greening up, the sound of cold snowmelt water coursing over the rocks, the sounds of birds, and at home, the sound of baby chicks, the scent of pine released by warm air, the white clouds dotting a blue sky on the south and dramatic storm clouds filling up the sky on the north...always a little different every few moments. Just perfect! A day we all relished our lives & living here, appreciating our little corner of the earth!
Thank you for keeping us mindful of this gift we easily take for granted.

Earth day happened to be my nephews baptism so I didn't do a whole lot of 'earthy' things but I did decorate with daffodils from my yard instead of buying pesticide-covered flowers at the store. Does that count?

This Earth Day my husband and I toured Repasaro Ranch, a farm in Portland that is in the process of being created by a wonderful family of four! We saw chickens, ducks, a garden, barn and even a beehive for those sweet honey bees! We shared a meal of sustainably grown produce, farmstead cheeses, humanely raised pork ribs cooked on the BBQ. For dinner we headed to another farmer friends' home to enjoy a warm, beautiful Portland, Oregon evening while eating more farm fresh food!
