Another EARTH DAY has come and gone but for many of us it's not just a " day " anymore. It's a lifestyle!
I remember the first Earth Day event I went to in 1991. The main focus was on recycling and alternative energy. It was there that Boz and I learned about an annual event called The National Solar Tour.
At the time we were planning to build an OFF GRID Straw Bale Home on ten acres of raw land we had purchased in the high desert of northern Nevada situated one mile away from power. We even attended a day-long straw bale workshop where we had the opportunity to help someone else get their wall ( bales ) in place! Fast Forward 21 years and a lot has changed ( we left our land for the sunny shores of Cape Cod Bay and a tiny OFF-GRID BEACH cottage ) in the world and in the hearts of people world wide about the way we live and how we can make our world a healthier place. Being organic and homesteading in the 70's was for hippies and folks who were against " the establishment". At least that's what the media wanted us to think. Thanks to the hard work of those
Businesses like Mountain Rose Herbs are doing their part every day to make sure we have products that are healthy for us and our Earth.
Mountain
Rose Herbs Debuts Sustainable Tea Packaging Made From Trash
EUGENE,
OR – February 21, 2012 – Mountain Rose Herbs, one of the nation’s largest
bulk suppliers of organic herbal products, has debuted new sustainable tea packaging
made entirely of garbage materials. After two years of research and
development, the company has produced a unique box made from 100% recycled
newspaper and compostable non-GMO plant cellulose for their line of certified
organic loose-leaf teas. This is the only certified organic tea line on the
market packaged with 100% post-consumer waste materials.
When Mountain Rose Herbs set out
to design the new tea line, their focus turned to finding an environmentally
conscious packaging option that was recycled, recyclable, biodegradable, and
reusable. “When we discovered this recycled newspaper board, we knew it was the
perfect fit for our commitment to sustainability. According to our research,
this is the only 100% post-consumer waste tea packaging in the industry and that’s
huge,” says Shawn Donnille, Vice President at Mountain Rose Herbs.
The newly designed packaging
features full color photos of the company’s organic teas with multi-layered
embossing to create a vibrant 3-demensional graphic effect using
environmentally friendly soy inks. Customers will be able to recycle, compost,
or reuse the new box. “The unique aesthetic of this tea box is just striking on
store shelves, but our customers really respond to the functionality and absolute
sustainability of the package. The fact that the boxes are beautiful is just an
added bonus,” says Donnille.

This Earth Day I worked at the nursery selling lots of veggie plants mostly to people who want to grow as much of their own foods as they can in their own backyards.
ReplyDeleteI would love to win this giveaway!! For earth day this year, we went to the Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens and met one of my favorite authors, Jane Kirkpatrick. Beautiful day and the lilacs were in bloom~simply perfect!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the new greenhouse!
Please enter me in the drawing and thank you to you and Mountain Rose Herbs for offering it. I came of age in the 60's and although I wasn't really a hippy...my kids think I was, I did grow up from day one appreciating homemade everything and using what you had both in problem solving and material goods. Every day is Earth Day to me and has been for many, many years.
ReplyDeleteOh I would love some Mountain Rose Tea! On Earth Day I was out digging in the dirt. I spent the weekend out in the lovely sunshine getting my garden beds ready to go. Doing an extreme amount of weeding and planting. Now I think it is a little time for relaxing and tea!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad I stumbled upon your beautiful site! I've been looking for a local tea company--so thanks for pointing me to Mountain Rose. (By the way, the link you provided needs a "u" to make it functional.)
ReplyDeleteEarth Day is a way of life for me and my family, and we're always looking for ways to live more sustainably. We're also a homeschooling/eclectic schooling family.
Nice to meet you here!
Lorraine
Isn't it amazing how things from the past make their way back around again. I was little girl during those "hippie days" but those days left an imprint on me that I have not been able to ignore.

What a wonderful giveaway! We weeded our garden and tended our apple trees for earth day. :)
ReplyDeleteA wonderful post ! I was raised on a farm and it is soo different from now . Yesterday, earth day we spent the day trimming the hedges . Have a great day !
ReplyDeleteFor Earth day it was rainy and cold so I sat in the house crocheting the last of my market bags. I would rather use them then the plastic ones any day.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun giveaway - I'd love to enter! We stayed home on Earth day (no driving), had some fun family time, and later I sewed a reusable grocery bag for another Farmgirl Sister. :)
ReplyDeleteI,too, would love to enter the giveaway! I love tea!
ReplyDeleteFor earth day we took our second granddaughter to Northwest Trek to celebrate her 5th birthday and to see some of the endangered wildlife species showcased there.
I would love to enter, to become familiar with Mountain Rose Herbs!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Country Gal- a wonderful, thoughtful, post in itself. Is there anything much more relevant to us all than our earth's health?
Here in So. Colorado we had a picture perfect day - We went to church where I got to hear my mother sing a song about the earth always renewing itself and creation (she is developing dementia and this was cause of celebration in itself, maybe the last time I hear her sing), then we had a picnic at a cut stone table like out of the Flintstones cartoon, along the Animas River Trail (a cement 'trail' so I could get my mom in a wheelchair and dad out too), then later we had a BBQ of grassfed beef... We enjoyed the day like no other: the smell of river trees greening up, the sound of cold snowmelt water coursing over the rocks, the sounds of birds, and at home, the sound of baby chicks, the scent of pine released by warm air, the white clouds dotting a blue sky on the south and dramatic storm clouds filling up the sky on the north...always a little different every few moments. Just perfect! A day we all relished our lives & living here, appreciating our little corner of the earth!
Thank you for keeping us mindful of this gift we easily take for granted.
We visited the Victory Garden South at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, GA.
ReplyDeleteI would love the tea. Throw my name into the hat, please.

ReplyDeleteI'd love to win this! I'm trying to cut wayyyy back on coffee and this would be a great help. Earth day happened to be my nephews baptism so I didn't do a whole lot of 'earthy' things but I did decorate with daffodils from my yard instead of buying pesticide-covered flowers at the store. Does that count?
ReplyDeletePlease enter me. My daughter is adding to her chicken flock, so she and her dad are building a coop.
ReplyDeleteJust walked around my yard with the Bug and the feathered ladies following behind. Hubs is filling in the holes in our long lane with some gravel this evening. Not much of a celebration but a sunny day.
ReplyDeleteI want to enter! I spent Earth Day at a harp and flute concert. My daughter was one of the harpists.
ReplyDeleteToday I visited with friends and family. My cousin has a Mulberry tree so she picked mulberries. Checked on the english peas that are starting to bloom. Prior to that I had lunch with my sister-in-law at our favorite Mexican restaurant. It has been a good day!
ReplyDeleteI am enjoying this site so much. I was raised in the country. You could not pay me to be a "city" girl.
Mmm, organic tea! Yes, I would love to be entered in the drawing.
ReplyDeleteI spent the afternoon outdoors photographing the wildlife in my yard. Fun, relaxing and entertaining!
Thank you for hosting this delicious giveaway!
This Earth Day I expanded my raised bed garden. I'd love to be entered in your giveaway!
ReplyDeleteWe spent several hours pulling garlic mustard out of our woods...our woods are full of invasive plants and we are doing our part to get rid of them and encourage native wildlflowers and good trees.
ReplyDeleteI would love to win this great give away!!!! Put me in for the drawing, please. Yesterday was earth day and DH and I made raised garden beds and 2 potato boxes to plant potatoes vertically to save space. Hope they work well, they are supposed to produce 100 lb. each.
ReplyDeleteI worked all day, lol!
ReplyDeletePlease add me to your give away- not much, but my earth day moment was adding egg shells to the composter!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to enter your giveaway. To celebrate Earth day this year, my son and I planted two new jasmine vines to tempt the bees and beautify our yard

ReplyDeleteI LOVE Mountain Rose Herbs - the staff AND their products are wonderful! This Earth Day my husband and I toured Repasaro Ranch, a farm in Portland that is in the process of being created by a wonderful family of four! We saw chickens, ducks, a garden, barn and even a beehive for those sweet honey bees! We shared a meal of sustainably grown produce, farmstead cheeses, humanely raised pork ribs cooked on the BBQ. For dinner we headed to another farmer friends' home to enjoy a warm, beautiful Portland, Oregon evening while eating more farm fresh food!
ReplyDeleteAnyway here love growing sprouts? Mountain Rose Herbs sells a nice variety of all sorts of tasty sprouts (today for lunch I enjoyed the MRH Crimson Clover sprouts that I grew in a simple mason jar with a Down To Earth Sprouting Screen) During an internship with Oregon Tilth, I had the opportunity to write an article on HOW TO GROW SPROUTS for the In Good Tilth publication which is now available for reading online (here's the link: http://oregonwebpress.com/digital/oregon_tilth/2012/jan/#/28/) - enjoy!! Just thought I'd share it with this wonderful Dandelion House audience to inspire others to grow tasty, nutritious sprouts!
And, one more thing, did you know that Deb's Farmgirl story is being featured on FARMMADE this week? Head on over to http://www.facebook.com/farmmade and http://twitter.com/farmmade to read more about Deb's story. Happy Farming, Gardening and Homesteading to you all if you farm girls & boys!! :)
