It's finally here! The day we've all been waiting for! The Dahlias are starting to bloom in my backyard flower farm! So many of my perennials in the established borders are already past their prime but the cut flower gardens are starting to shine!
I've just come in from feeding the flowers, doing some pest control and snapping a bouquet of images!
The flowers were looking especially photogenic today after getting a much needed drink from last nights rainstorm. It's been four months since the Dahlias were planted and each day since then has been worth waiting for this day!
Keep in mind that none of these are in ' full bloom ' yet...! Look at the center of each flower and you can tell they still have a ways to go!
The range of colors is mind boggling...

They are all so beautiful ! We are waiting for rain desperately , have been in a drought for a little over a month , some farmers crops have been destroyed . It is to rain hopefully tomorrow night right into Sat . I do love your header photo ! Have a good day !

ReplyDeleteThey are beautiful! My mother was a lover of Dahlias and grew some oustanding ones! I'm sorry to say I don't have her green thumb.

DeleteThe dahlias are wonderful I've never tried growing those.
ReplyDeleteDespite having to stay on top of the bug situation they have been very easy... They like it hot.. so not very water consuming at all and if fed well they'll bloom easily! Give them a try!
DeleteThese are beautiful! I've never grown dahlias before. I wonder how they would do in my climate. We're in the middle of a terrible drought/heat wave.
ReplyDeleteYou can always look them up for your gardening zone... I figured they must do well here when I saw them at my local garden center back in March. Good luck if you try them!

DeleteBoy, am I impressed with your first try at dahlias! I tried to pick out a favorite, but they are all gorgeous! What type of fertilizer are you using? After I figured out that my resident baby rabbit was one of the culprits eating the foliage off a couple of my sprouting plants (wrapped that plastic screen material around them), I am now enjoying some blooms.
ReplyDeleteI planted my dahlias in an area that gets shade from some other vegetation later in the growing season. Also will change that next year! Yes, they do like their SUN...I think that I like the conformity of the blossom, though I got a couple of strange ones that I will take some pics of and send to you...

ReplyDeleteI am using a liquid organic concentrate made by Miracle Grow. ! One cap full to two gallons water...Once every three weeks. Plus an organic pellet for bug control. After you shared with me they would grow even if I planted them upside down I was on my way! LOL... I have an unusual looking one in my batch as well. Not the blooms so much as the foliage. So glad you saved yours from from that precocious baby rabbit!Keep at it Jan!
Every photo had me oooohhhh-ing and aaaaaahhhhhh-ing! What a great reward! I enjoyed dahlias in Washington state in our college's garden, but never felt intrepid enough to try them myself, especially in this hot, dry desert! I'll enjoy your photos instead!!! So pretty.

DeleteWow Deborah, those are so beautiful. My daughter gave me a yellow one that has been in a pot for a few years, it comes back to life every spring. I need to put it in the ground so that it can expand. Do they spread or multiply any? Love your header.
ReplyDeleteGood question Sheryl, I don't know if they multiply but I do know they like being planted in groups... like three or four tubers together either in a pot or in ground.
DeleteOh, that is so beuatiful! I love dahlias, but I have never seen any bloom in the garden expect for in a pot. I have a purple beauty that has been blooming in a pot since May.;)
