Farmgirl Friday Blog Hop # 111

Happy Farmgirl Friday# 111 friends!

Are you finding it hard to sit still at your computers now that the nicer weather is here?  I confess, I sure am. I can't believe it's the last day of May already. So much is happening in the garden right now. I've already harvested Rhubarb and baked my first Strawberry, Blueberry, Rhubarb pie. Most of my annual flower seed planting is done ,the veggies are in plus I've got a few bare patches calling out for a plan.  Even though the garden pulls at me like a magnet to metal I wouldn't miss a Farmgirl Friday Party for anything so let's get started shall we?

Rusty Redo~ Chicken Feeder Flower Garden

Today started out wet and cloudy after a full day of rain yesterday.  It finally cleared late this afternoon and I promptly went out do get started on a fun container garden I've been wanting to get to.
One of the very first estate sales Boz and I went to this spring was located on an old farm. The property consisted of the house, a huge barn with greenhouse and a very large chicken coop. By the size of it one could only imagine that they raised chickens for meat and eggs as part of their farm business.
I didn't have much on my list that day but one thing I hoped to find was an antique/vintage chicken feeder. I was actually more excited to check out the chicken coop more than the house!  Lady luck was with me because it's the first thing I saw and bought. I don't need it for feeding my girls. I wanted one to use as a planter!

See the little openings all in a row? They're perfect for plopping in pansies. This particular feeder is two sided with an opening in the middle. It must have hung down the center of the coop so the hens could feed from both sides.

Pansies seem to be more popular than ever this year and I can see why. They have the cutest little faces and come in the prettiest variety of colors too.

How to plant my chicken feeder was a no brainer. I just plopped on plant per opening into both sides of the feeder then added soil into the middle of it until the plants on the sides were covered and I had enough of a base to add the top layer of pansies to the feeder.

homemade compost

Now it's spilling over with pansies and the girls are going no where near it!

The pansies look a little droopy here, but with some water and sunshine they'll perk up in a few days.

China Cabinet Reveal ~ Miss Duck Egg

TA DA! Introducing Miss Duck Egg! I posted on my Facebook page earlier today that I'm feeling like quite the chalk paint rock star after giving a major up do to a large vintage china cabinet that's been hibernating in my basement for a few years.

Here she is with out her door on. I love the openness to the cabinet this way and I can imagine it filled with all sorts of purty things. Towels, linens, quilts, china books etc..

But,  I have a thing for swirls of any kind and I love the grill inside the glass door  that goes on the front just as much!

What I love most about this vintage china cabinet are the small details like the fluting on the frame, the chunky feet and the wooden appliques on the top

and bottom.

Another thing I love about his piece are it's imperfections. It has little dings and knicks, and even a few pieces that have fallen or dropped off along the way... A well lived life has a way of doing that to a gal, but Miss Duck Egg has weathered it all in stride. Sure, her hardware's a little rusty and her skin might be cracked and scarred but she's still got some life left in her...Nothing a little AS Duck Egg Chalk Paint and a little clear SOFT WAX can't fix!

What do ya think? Is she ready to rock n roll again?

She's got her bling on and she's ready to go!

I'm taking her to Burlap and Bling for her debut this weekend.
I hope someone asks her to kick up her heels one last time!

Painting Progress Report ( Duck Egg Blue )

Good morning all! Today might be the first time I post twice in one day since starting my blog in 2009! I'm reporting in with my painting progress from yesterday.

I have to tell you I am IN LOVE with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint !!! I've been painting furniture for years and this paint has renewed my passion for painting again. I'm loving the results ( so far ) on my vintage a china cabinet.
At first I was going to trim all the details and frame in old white then wax it with a mix if clear and dark wax, but as I painted I loved how the original wood finish looked underneath so I  just kept playing until I liked it.

I literally slapped the paint on the legs and I love how it looks so spattered and worn.

I also love the wood tones in this molding trim along the bottom of the piece so I'm leav'n it like it is...

ASCP dries quickly, but not too quick allowing the artist to play and experiment with different techniques. If the paint gets too thick for smooth brush strokes just add water and you're back in business plus you can mix the paint and customize your own tints!

I'm off to do a little more painting, rubbing, sanding and waxing. No, not my eyebrows,  the china cabinet! You guy's are too much!
What do you think so far? I'll be back later on with the final report on this lovely lady!

Toodles!
Deb

Painting and Planting...

Howdy friends! Whew doggies is it busy around here! Are you burning the candle at both ends too?
There's so much to do this time of year, but it's all good, right?
My Duck Egg Blue Annie Sloan Chalk Paint arrived by mail yesterday! Now I can get started on that monster in the above photo... It's a great piece with lots of little carvings and details. I'll be back with after photos once I've tamed her into the elegant lady she is destined to be!

I'll be in the garden while the paint dries... It's just nutty I tell ya!

Tasty Tuesday~ Homemade Goats Butter

Welcome to Tasty Tuesday at Dandelion House! Your go- to spot for trying something new and healthy each week in your homestead kitchen
This week's Tasty Tuesday feature is a double share recipe and a treat for all of  my friends who keep goats. I do not keep goats, but I love seeing all of yours and enjoy sharing things I think will inspire you in your goat keeping adventures!

Michelle from Little Piece of Heaven featured this amazing homemade goats butter tutorial from Louise's Country Closet on her blog last week and shared it again on Farmgirl Friday. I guess that makes it a triple share

Here's what Louise has to say about raising goats and making your own homemade goat butter...

Homemade Butter Using Goat Milk

" Getting our own goats wasn't just because we wanted another pet (the stranger, the better!) but we wanted to have our own milk, make our own cheese and even try our hand at butter. I really didn't research much into the butter part of it because who would have thought that making something so simple could be so difficult? Well, turns out it wasn't quite as hard as I thought it would be! " ~ Louise

Farmgirl Friday Blog Hop # 109

You know what time it is? It's time to gather once again with your farmgirl pals from far and wide right here at the Farmgirl Friday Blog Hop # 109!

The weather here on the shorelines has been just glorious! Like many of you, I've been so busy in the garden I don't know which way is up by the time my head hits my pillow at night. What I do know is that I'm loving having " dirt under my nails " again!
It's rare that we get more than a couple of sunny days in a row during spring in New England so we are taking advantage of it by getting two big ( and quite over do ) projects out of the way.
This week on our suburban homestead has been devoted to getting my early annual seeds and flowering bulbs in the ground as well as finally getting round to staining our very faded, weathered deck and spray painting our rusty Gazebo! I'm happy to be getting them checked off the list because the flowers and plants will look so much fresher and prettier this season!

We painted the Gazebo with Satin Black Rustolium spray paint that has rust inhibitors in the paint. I love using black in the garden.. It creates drama and believe it or not makes a great background color for colorful blooms or deep green foliage.

Here's what it looked like last summer with the gardens in full bloom in mid July!  I'll share more pics when we get things put back together again!

Sewing Seeds a Plenty with my Garden Dibbles!

Don't you just love the first few days of late spring when the temperatures finally warm up and the leaves are bursting out with all of their might? All that green and the sweet scent of " dirt" is enough to get this farmgirl dancing a jig all day! I'm excited to be getting my annual seeds planted over the next few days and I'm even more thrilled because I get to try out my garden dibbles!
These aren't just any old garden dibbles. They are hand carved out of reclaimed bits of wood fashioned by Rob of Bepa's Organic Garden Blog.

Below is the larger dibble, perfect for large seeds like peas, sunflowers and small bulbs like onions, garlic and summer flowering bulbs such as Crocosmia Lucifer. I guess they are red as the devil aren't they?

I planted them alongside the orange and yellow dahlias. Imagine them in bouquets together with some purple or  blue to calm things down a little.

Oh, aren't we going to have fun watching things come up together?

Are you planting annals this season? Do tell!

Rob has his Heirloom quality Dibbles for sale in his Etsy Shop! Go grab a couple for this season and many more to come!
