A KNOCK OUT ROSE PARADE

Happy Monday friends! Whew! I don't think I've ever been so happy to wake up to a misty day as I am today. We worked our tails off in the garden this weekend! (Well, some of them ) At this moment I'm happy to be nice and dry inside! Picture me in my comfy clothes, writing to you with a nice cup of hot coffee and Max by my side. I have to tell you I have fallen in love with Knock Out Roses! I simply adore everything about them. With blossoms ranging in color from the brightest pinks to the softest, subtle  pale pink and the most delicious pale yellow. Who wouldn't be smitten?

I also added a striking landscape rose called Coral Drift   made by the Introducers of the Knock Out Rose that reminds me of one of my favorite nail polish colors in a ground cover variety right near our deck.

The color is just mesmerizing, and the scent? Ooh La la!

As with any new love affair the thorns have yet to come out but the folks at the nursery swear by them as being disease resistant ( no powdery mildew) with blooms that start in mid- spring and last until the first frost. Sounds like the perfect marriage of a rose Gardner and rose to me!
My established gardens were missing some mid -late spring color pop and fragrance, but not anymore!  The shape of the blossoms remind me of the wild roses ( sea roses ) that bloom in mass profusion along the road to our cottage.

Do any of you grow either of these hardy beauties in your garden?
I'm sharing this post with Heidi's Country Garden Showcase , The Homestead Barnhop,
and An Oregon Cottage Tuesday Garden Party!

I don't grow any of these, but I do grow many roses. Most of which I have received from my mother. She had over 100 roses in her garden. When she passed away in 2005, I dug up about a dozen and am pleased to have a lovely garden dedicated to her.

I especially love the last rose in your photos, it really does remind me of an old wild rose.

You have a beautiful blog and I just joined so I can follow you. I will also add you to my blog roll so I won't miss out on your garden. Have a beautiful (restful) day.

I love my knock out roses. They just keep blooming all summer long. But here in the NW nursery's have decided they are gold and the prices have jump tremendously, yikes! I guess there is a demand now for these beauties and they are going to capitalize on the market. Sad because I wanted another plant but won't pay their prices. Maybe next year, so for this year I will enjoy the once I have and enjoy your pictures of yours!

I work at a nursery caring for the roses and the Knock Outs seem to be very disease resistant. Last year was the first time I had seen the drift roses and I planted one in a pot for display, it looked really nice and bloomed its heart out so I took home a peach colored one and planted it. It has just started blooming and I am loving it!

Hi Deb! These types of roses are great. They love to be fed and so far I have had pretty good success with them on Cape. Your photos are so lovely and they brought a smile to my day, as much as imagining you with your coffee and Max! Have a wonderful day!

Hi Carla and welcome! Well, it sounds as if you are a pro rose gardener. I love that you have a rose garden in your mothers memory. She must have passed on her green rose thumb to you! Thank you for the visit! Enjoy this day!

Hi Junebug! I'm looking forward to the long lastding blooms too... Here in the Northeast they have grown popular as well, but prices are still reasonable. Maybe you could order online for a better deal? Thanks for the visit!

H ferne, I'm thinking of planting some drift roses in pots on our stone patio as well! They truly are a wonderful plant! Thanks for your note and enjoy your roses!

Hi Melissa! So nice to hear from you ( and your flock ) today! I'm happy to hear you have had success with them on Cape... we share the same garden zone so perhaps your good luck will be with me too! You have a terrific day too!

Hi Dolly! They are healthy and the colors are almost electric! They make a wonderful contrast to all the green we are surrounded by in our area! And, they are very pretty in front of a picket fence! :) Have a great day Dolly!

I have one of these, purchased reluctantly from a co-worker for her son's band fund raiser. Little did I know what a gem I had. Mine sits at the corner of my front porch, getting a west or southwest exposure. I rarely water it and the downspout misses it. I never prune it and the only problem I ever have is those pesky japanese beetles. It started out several years ago in a gallon container and it's now at least 7-8 ft tall and I don't even know how big around. Amazing rose. One drawback, it doesn't have the fragrance as the old varieties.

Hi Kathy, I hope mine is as self-sufficient as yours sounds...I find these to be very fragrant! A light but ever present scent for sure! Enjoy your rose!

Mine hasnt bloomed yet but it is full of new leaves , last year bugs were eating it and didnt do so well but this year it looks great so far. I to have had two days of planitng lots of work but for me it's worth it when it all blooms and makes the gardens look soo pretty ! Have a great day !

We only have some climbing roses that were here when we bought this land. I have never been a rose grower and think maybe I should try a couple of these you have listed.

Hi Country Gal! Oh, I do hope the bugs stay away from your rose this year... My Lady Banks Rose has tiny worms munching away on it right now that I need to take care of, if you get my drift! Thanks for the visit!

I've never been much of a rose grower either Brenda, but I'm dipping my toes in gently..I just love them! The add a touch of romance to the garden that no other bloom can duplicate!

I love my knock out rose. I got one a few years ago before they were becoming popular. Its gorgeous and I get tons of complements. I got another one for mothers day this year. My first was red, and this one is pink. Can't wait for it to fill out its corner in the garden. Yours are lovely.

I love your roses. I used to have roses at a home we had before the one we are currently in. I didn't think I would miss them but I do. Been looking at them here and have not found what I would like yet. Will keep looking. Yours are beautiful.

Hi Little Red Hen! Oh, I'm looking for red too! Would love to have some near out stone wall, maybe in planters... Thanks for the note!

It's funny how we can miss plants from previous gardens isn't it? You"ll find some just right for your new garden!

Roses - some day when the deer fence is installed. Until then I can only dream!

I've never tried Knockout Roses, but I have heard many good things about them, including that they are a good choice for areas where other roses might not survive. Yours are lovely in bloom!

Unknown said...

Hi Beth, Hmmm? I wonder if this variety is deer resistant? Or am I dreaming?

Unknown said...

Athena, I've only tried a few Old English Roses in my garden over the years and what I don't like about many of them is that the bloom time is too short. I'm hoping the Knock Out Roses will satisfy me in the blooms department!

Kanelstrand said...

Oh, so beautiful! I love roses! Because spring has been way too cool this year our roses just start blooming. The last photos... do they produce rosehips? You can make awesome jam with them!

Unknown said...

Hello Sonya! Yes, they do produce rose hips! We've got some in our yard at the cottage too, I just might try making jam with them this year! I don't think we can pick the ones along the beach road... Darn-it!

Every year for the past couple of years I've wanted to get a Knock-out rose, and yet, I still don't have one. Maybe this year'll be the year? Your post sure has me thinking about it again, though! :-) Thanks for sharing with us!

Hi Jami! Well this must be your year!
