The Finer Things~ by Joy Banks

What's hanging on your clothesline?

I am going back in time a bit, but I know there are some of you who still  remember the feeling of snuggling into a newly made bed with crisp sheets dried on the clothesline in the warm spring air.

Back in the days of my early girlhood I remember sleeping in a bed made with sheets that had been hanging on my mother’s clothes line all day soaking up the warm spring sun and the sweet smells of Mother Nature.

And to make it even better, Mother would iron the sheets and  pillow cases sealing in the outside freshness, adding to the already crisp texture.

With six children she had her work cut out for her…She would feed the sheets and pillow cases into her State of the Art Ideal Home Ironing Machine and they would come out perfect every time. Or maybe it just seemed that way to me.

Sleeping on crisp air dried linens was only the half of it. We didn’t have a finished bath at the time so mother heated water on the old wood stove. She filled the bucket and poured hot steaming water into a large galvanized tub.

In my mind there is still nothing better than crawling into a bed made by my mother with sheets that were hung on the line to dry after a hot bath.

Those memories will linger forever as some of the finer things in my life.

I cherish the memories I have of growing as a young child helping my great grandmother hang clothes on the line. She lived with us and actually LOVED to hang clothes out in the fresh air. She used a pulley system from the second floor balcony and it fascinated me.
Line dried linens rank right up there with my two other favorite scents..LAVENDAR and HORSES !

This is a lovely post- and what wonderful memories. I adore hanging clothes on our line. I never thought that such a simple, "mundane" task could be so charming and fulfilling. Thanks for sharing this at the HOmestead Barn HOp!
